Welcoming a newborn into your family is an incredibly special and joyous occasion. As a photographer specializing in Lifestyle Newborn Photography Sessions, I understand the importance of capturing these precious moments in a way that reflects the beauty and simplicity of the early days. Timeless wardrobe choices will help ensure your family remains the focus of your photos, so in this guide, we’ll explore what to wear for newborn family photos with a focus on soft, neutral, and simple wardrobe choices.
When thinking about what to wear for newborn family photos, my favorite way to pull together a well styled session is to incorporate neutrals, muted colors, or earth tones + texture + pattern.
The magic of newborn photography lies in its ability to document the essence of your family, just as it is. Soft neutrals, such as whites, creams, and gentle earth tones, can create a timeless images that bring you back to these fleeing moments that are so easily lost in those early newborn days. When considering what to wear for newborn family photos, think about printing and hanging your photos and how neutrals can compliment any décor style and colors.
Texture is a great way to add some depth and dimension to your photos. Linen or gauze fabrics are so beautiful and can add a softness to your photos. Cotton, chambray, and knits are also wonderful options. Waffle knits or anything with buttons are beautiful, too!
Another tip for what to wear for newborn family photos is to add a subtle pattern for visual interest. This could be a simple stripe or a dainty floral. I typically recommend 1 pattern for every 4 family members.
One of the unique services provided by Elizabeth Pachniak Photography is the option for clients to either style their own outfits using the EPP Style Guide, or borrow from the complimentary Client Wardrobe. Let’s explore both options to help you make an informed choice about what to wear for newborn family photos.
If you prefer to style your own session, you’re more than welcome to do so! You can use the EPP Style Guide for direction and then head to your closet. Simple is so beautiful, as it doesn’t distract from the main focus of your photos – your new little love and your growing family. All that to say, comfort is still important! Parents (especially mama) and siblings should feel comfortable and at ease during their session. Here are some ideas for what to wear for newborn family photos.
Mom: Flowy dresses or comfortable separates in neutral tones work well. Consider maxi dresses, wrap dresses, or off-the-shoulder styles for an elegant and timeless look. Some of my favorite place to shop for mom include: Lulu’s, Bohme, Petal & Pup, One Loved Babe, Piper & Scoot, Free People, Target, Amazon
Dad: Classic button-down shirts, Henley shirts, knit sweaters, or plain t-shirts paired with well-fitted jeans or khakis are ideal. Some of my favorite places to shop for Dad includes: American Eagle, Lucky brand, Eddie Bauer, Old Navy, Target, Amazon
Siblings: Coordinate rather than match. Dress siblings in outfits that complement the overall color scheme and avoid large logos or characters that may be distracting. Some of my favorite places to shop for littles includes: H&M, Zara, Jamie Kay, Carters/Little Planet line, Little Co. by Lauren Conrad (Kohls), Rylee + Cru, Old Navy, Amazon
Or, if you don’t want to have to worry about what to wear for newborn family photos at all, you can borrow from the Client Wardrobe which has plenty of postpartum friendly options for mama, little onsies and outfits for baby, and outfits options for kids through size 5t. The Client Wardrobe is chock full of photo-approved outfit options and you don’t have to worry about ordering anything you’ll only wear once.
Accessories can also elevate the overall look of your in-home Lifestyle Newborn Photography Session. For moms, consider delicate jewelry or a simple headband, and swaddle blankets and headbands (also available in the Client Wardrobe) can add a sweet touch to your baby’s look.
Comfort is Key: While all these tips can help elevate the overall look and feel of your photos, it’s most important to wear what you feel most comfortable in, especially for mama since she’s likely still recovering from giving birth.
Avoid Logos and Busy Patterns: When thinking about what to wear for newborn family photos, logos and busy patterns can be distracting in photos so do your best to avoid them. Instead, opt for solid colors, textures or subtle patterns that contribute to the overall look without overwhelming the photo.
Avoid Bold or Dark Colors: Bright and dark colors can cast unwanted color on yours or others skin. If you do enjoy some color, muted earthy tones are a great option. Think dusty blue instead of blue, mauve instead of pink, mustard instead of yellow, sage or hunter instead of green, etc.
Try for Lighter Colors: Lighter colors can brighten photos, and even act as a reflector to brighten and flatter skin tones, especially when there isn’t a ton of natural light.
White can work, but bright white or black can sometimes photograph intensely and lose depth, so I usually recommend creams/ivories or dark grey instead.
I hope you found this guide helpful as you start thinking about what to wear for your newborn family photos. Whether styling your own outfits or borrowing from the Client Wardrobe, you can rest assured knowing your family will be beautifully documented with cherished memories to last a lifetime.
