Mommy-and-Me Photography in Madison, WI | A Cottage Grove Wildflower Session

There are some photography sessions that feel special from the very beginning, and this mommy-and-me session in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, was one of them.

The weather was gorgeous. The sun was shining. The wildflowers were at their absolute peak. But more than anything, it was the connection between this mom and her daughter that made this evening so incredibly meaningful.

Before their session, Mom shared something that immediately stuck with me. Her daughter was about to start kindergarten, and she wanted to capture a little bit of the “baby” that was still left before heading off to school.

She wanted photos that were joyful, imaginative, adventurous, silly, affectionate, and full of wonder. She wanted these photographs to feel like them.

She wanted to run together. Dance together. Twirl. Laugh. Snuggle. And capture all of those little in-between moments where they’re simply enjoying each other.

And that is exactly what we did.

A Mommy-and-Me Session Full of Joy

Right from the beginning, this session came alive.

There was so much movement and laughter throughout their session. They explored the wildflowers, ran together, twirled in the sunshine, cuddled close, and shared the kind of effortless affection that comes from two people who know and love each other deeply.

These are the moments I love most about family photography.

Not necessarily the moments when everyone is looking perfectly at the camera, but the moments in between. The laugh that happens after a silly game. The little hand reaching for Mom’s. The way a daughter still climbs into her mom’s arms. The way they look at each other when they think no one is watching.

Those are the photographs that tell a story.

Capturing the Last Little Bit of Babyhood

There is something especially emotional about photographing a child right before a big milestone.

Starting kindergarten is exciting. It’s a new adventure and the beginning of so much independence. But for parents, it can also feel like the end of a very special chapter.

One day they’re tiny enough to carry everywhere, and seemingly overnight they’re packing their own backpack and heading off to school.

I think that’s what made this mommy-and-me photography session in Madison so meaningful. It wasn’t about trying to stop time. It was about pausing long enough to appreciate exactly where they were.

The twirling.

The silliness.

The cuddles.

The laughter.

The little girl who still wants to be close to Mom.

All of those things that feel so ordinary when you’re living them, but that you’ll one day wish you could step back into for just a moment.

A Celebration of Their Relationship

When Mom filled out her questionnaire before the session, she said something that I loved:

More than anything, she wanted these photographs to feel like a celebration of their relationship.

And I think we accomplished exactly that.

These images aren’t just photographs of a mom and her daughter. They tell the story of a little girl who is deeply loved and a mom who genuinely delights in being with her.

Years from now, I hope they look at these photographs and remember more than what she was wearing or what her hair looked like.

I hope she remembers how much fun she had with her mom.

How they ran through the flowers.

How they laughed and played.

How safe and loved she felt in her arms.

Because that is what I believe family photography is really about.

It’s about preserving the feeling of a season of life—not just documenting what it looked like.

And this season, right here in the wildflowers of Cottage Grove, was pretty beautiful.
